| October 13, 2008 Classics -- Game 3 -- Bronze Medal
The Ontario Classics Champions met Quebec's EDO United Team in light rain and 11 degrees temperature. The game began with both teams playing cautiously and creating some scoring opportunities. Once settled in, Ontario started to push and created numerous scoring opportunities. With Quebec trying to play the off-side trap, Ontario's Samantha Hellens sent a ball through to Martha Hall who made good on the break-away and put the ball past the Quebec keeper at the 30-minute mark. The first half ended with Ontario up 1 - 0. In the second half, Quebec started strong but Ontario fought back and both teams continued to press with the play in both ends. Both teams had several scoring opportunities and with about 15 minutes left in the game, Quebec pushed forward and attacked with 3 strikers trying to press for the tying goal. Ontario's defense held firm and protected their 1-goal lead to give Rexdale United Elites' Cheryl Curtis her first shut-out of the tournament and bring home the Bronze Medal for Ontario. The Ontario Classics Champions met the Manitoba Wisegals under warm and sunny skies for the first half and slightly overcast for the second. Right from the start, the Ontario team dominated and controlled the play. The Elites created several scoring opportunities and were rewarded for their hard work in the 21st minute. A free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box was converted by Samantha Hellens as she burried the ball into the back of the net. Despite several more opportunities, the first half ended with Ontario up 1-0. The second half evolved the same as the first with Ontario controlling most of the play. Manitoba launched several forays into Ontario's end a few times, but without success. At the 75-minute mark, Ontario was given a corner-kick which Jennifer Patterson centred perfectly to find the head of Sharon Djordjevic for Ontario's second marker. The persistent counter-attacks by Manitoba paid off in the 78th minute when the Wisegals scored a come-back goal. Despite alternating pressure by both sides, the game ended 2-1 in favour of Manitoba. The Ontario Classics Champions met the Meralomas A Team from BC on Finlayson Park's turf field under sunny skies with 12 degrees and very little wind. The Ontario ladies started off flat and nerves were evident as BC had several opportunities in the first few minutes of the game and put one on the scoreboard at the 10-minute mark. Ontario then settled into their game plan and created several scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize. The half ended with BC up 1-0. In the second half, Ontario started strong and again had several good scoring opportunities but were unlucky in finding the back of the net. With the Elites pushing forward at the 60th minute, BC fed an open forward who caught Ontario's defense flat-footed and scored to put the Meralomas ahead 2-0. The remaining 20 minutes were dominated by Ontario, but they could not put the ball past the BC goalkeeper and the game ended 2-0 in favour of BC. Reported by Vern Punnett / OSA Rep |
